Just Announced! A Cultural Heritage Fellowship

Posted on April 3, 2017 by in The OFI Blog

The Smithsonian and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) are excited to announce a new fellowship opportunity! This opportunity will grant a fellow the chance to study in DC at both the Smithsonian and the ACHP, and to gain experience at a site of national historical significance of their choice.

The focus of the fellowship is to explore place-based, cultural heritage and the connection between intangible cultural heritage and place.

For example, a fellow could research Los Matachines ritual dance, with origins tracing back to the Moors. It is performed throughout the New World and while performances usually have similar elements, the traditions surrounding the dance, the music, and the performance itself are unique to each location. At El Santuario de Chimayo, a National Historic Landmark outside Santa Fe, NM, Los Matachines is performed twice a year, during Easter and the Santo Niño Fiesta.

The theme for the inaugural fellowship in Fall 2017 is Latino Heritage. We anticipate a new theme with every announcement cycle. To learn more, go here.
