The Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG) is seeking highly motivated interns for an opportunity in their Office of Advancement. This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students with a focus in Museum Studies or Arts Management to gain experience in a fast paced work environment at a prestigious art museum, preparing the intern for a career in the arts.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Interns will assist the Advancement Office in a variety of administrative, research, and donor related duties. Interns will research prospective corporate sponsors, foundations, and individuals online; write and prepare materials for proposals; manage the assembly of fundraising materials and
mailings; assist with donor cultivation events; and interact with donors. Interns will work across several departments including curatorial, programs and education, exhibits, and communications in order to complete said tasks.

Learning Objectives:
Interns will learn how to effectively research donors at the individual, corporate and foundation levels; write proposals for exhibition fundraising; gain insight into grant writing; and gain a better understand the interconnectivity of the various departments within a museum.

Interns should be detail-oriented; possess strong writing and critical thinking skills; have a working knowledge of Microsoft Suite; be able to communicate in a professional manner with prospective and current donors, board members, museum visitors, and colleagues; as well as have a strong interest in the fundraising aspect of a nonprofit museum. Specialization in modern and contemporary art history is helpful, but not required.

Term: 4 – 5 Months
Part time (20 hours/week) or Full Time (35 hours/week)
