Careers on Fire
“The presentation highlighted use of a hypoxic (reduced oxygen) atmosphere as an innovative means of protecting the Star Spangled Banner from fire, the first large US application of the technology.” Jim Call
About 75 students attended The Fire Protection Engineering Career Fair at UMD College Park on February 11th, 2015. Representatives from most of the 35 companies gave short presentations where they indicated they were interested in hiring no less than 90 fire protection engineers – hard to do from a class of less than 50! The Smithsonian presentation was given by Jim Call, a Fire Protection Engineer, from The Office of Safety, Health, and Environmental Management (OSHEM). Matt Gibbons, the newest fire protection engineer at OSHEM and a UMD Alumnus, also attended. SI is looking for several fire protection interns over the next few years.
