Ashley Luke, former Marketing Video Intern for the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Public Affairs credits her internship experience with helping her land her dream job as a Communications and Digital Media Coordinator at Centers for Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA) and Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) in Fort Pierce, Florida.

A double major in Journalism and Central American Studies from California State University-Northridge, Ashley’s internship with the Smithsonian Institution Office of Public Affairs presented a whole new set of exciting challenges. Ashley piloted the first series of “Seriously Amazing” videos. Her internship duties involved scouring the Smithsonian’s extensive collections and expert researchers and curators for behind the scenes interviews. She was tasked with shooting videos ranging in topics from giant squid eyes, to Abraham Lincoln’s famous top hat, to live Civil Rights sit-ins — all featured content in Smithsonian’s promotional video “The Smithsonian Is…” A sample of one of Ashley’s videos can be seen here.

Ashley offers this sage advice for current SI interns: “Explore, explore, explore! Smithsonian is a part of you now. During your time at your internship get out and see what each museum has to offer. Take advantage of not waiting in those long lines especially during summer and adventure into the new exhibits.”  And, “blog about your experience DURING the internship. As interns come from across the country, share a piece of the Capitol with your family, friends, mentors, including the ones who wrote your letters of recommendation. Pay it forward with a creative, yet simple appreciation for what you’re doing in your internship. Involve everyone that made it possible to virtually travel with you through your blog.”
