Algal Blooms

Queensland, Australia scientist Dr Aaron Davis was recently awarded a Queensland Government-funded Smithsonian Fellowship to further his research on the environmental effects of using urea-based nitrogenous fertilizers in agriculture Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD.

Urea is a popular, cost effective fertilizer choice widely used by a variety of agriculture producers. Previous research has identified pure urea as a cause of algal blooms in the northern hemisphere, a concern Dr Davis wants to address. He also hopes to learn about the impact of fertilizer run-off on water quality during his time at the Smithsonian.
