Smithsonian Academic Appointment Diversity and Publicity Taskforce (AADAPT)
The Academic Appointment Diversity and Publicity Taskforce (AADAPT) is dedicated to increasing diversity in all forms including but not limited to gender, race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, age, ability, and sexual orientation in Smithsonian Institution’s internships and fellowships.
AADAPT’s pan-institutional team meets quarterly. Members regularly participate in outreach events such as affinity-group conferences and internship/career fairs in Washington, DC and around the country to promote SI academic programs to diverse audiences. On January 11, 2017, American University students participating in the school’s annual Class to Career Conference spent their morning at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History (NMAH). On Friday November 18, 2016, the CAREERS and the disABLED Career Expo took place at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. The event allows federal agencies and other potential employers to speak with disabled professionals, with an emphasis on disabled military veterans who want to reenter the workforce. Geri Provost-Lyons, Docent and Intern Programs Manager at the National Portrait Gallery and Sean Butler, OHR Diversity and Recruitment Specialist attended the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) 9th Annual Conference on Monday 10/24/16 and Tuesday 10/25/16. For the fourth consecutive year SI Academic Appointment Diversity and Public Taskforce (AADAPT) had a pan-institutional presence at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) annual conference. This year was special as it marked HACU’s 30th anniversary and the conference was held at HACU’s headquarters in San Antonio, Texas between Saturday 10/8/16 and Monday 10/10/16. On Tuesday 9/20/16, a career conference was held at the University of the District of Columbia, which is the only public university in D.C. and one of only a few urban-land grant universities in the country. The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities convened the 2016 National HBCU Week Conference, which ran from Sunday 10/22/16 to Wednesday 10/26/16. The conference consisted of seminars, meetings, and meet and greets; United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch even spoke at the conference on Tuesday. Smithsonian representatives attended in order to highlight SI internship and fellowship opportunities to HBCU students and faculty. For three weeks, beginning August 16 and ending September 1, 2016, ten high school students from Arlington, VA and Alexandria, VA took part in an externship program at the Smithsonian Institution through the Office of Fellowships and Internships. The program was sponsored in part by the 4-H Youth Development Alexandria Cooperative Extension under the leadership of Reginald Morris.
