Smithsonian Office of International Relations Seeks Fall Intern

The Office of International Relations (OIR) at Smithsonian serves as the central point for Institution-wide advice, insight, analysis, and coordination of all international activities of the Institution. OIR is the central external representative of international programs for the Institution, and leads institutional relationships with US government and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, foreign embassies, and other governmental and private organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

The internship provides key professional development opportunities in the field of International Education and International Affairs. The Office of International Relations offers a dynamic learning environment with a number of new international projects underway, which will allow the intern to identify interest areas and seek new information. The internship will also provide introductory training in SEVIS, J-1 visa regulations and requirements, and other skills specific to working with international visitors. There is also opportunity for the intern to use current technology to improve the overall international visitor experience at Smithsonian.  Internship duties include:

·         Developing orientation session for incoming J-1 visitors

·         Updating filing system and databases for managing J-1 visitors

·         Following up with required J-1 visitor documentation as needed

·         Assisting with implementation of technology to better serve international visitors

·         Developing and organizing programming activities for international visitors

·         Other duties to be decided as needed  

Qualifications:  This position is designed for a degree-seeking graduate student, preferably in the field of International Education, International Affairs or related field. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential.  Prior experience in a cross-cultural setting as well as an office environment is preferred.  An excellent command of the English language, as well as strong interpersonal skills, is required.  Candidate must also be self-motivated, organized, and detail oriented.
